My Experience Traveling in Ella: A Journey into Sri Lanka’s Hidden Paradise

If someone asked me where heaven touches earth in Sri Lanka, I would confidently say: Ella. Nestled in the heart of the hill country, this little town offered me one of the most peaceful, adventurous, and refreshing experiences of my life. It wasn’t just a trip — it was a memory carved deep into my heart.

A Special Journey With My Mom and Sister

The trip was even more meaningful because I went with my mom and my elder sister. My mother lives in Italy and had come to visit us after a long time. So, in 2023, when she arrived in Sri Lanka, we decided to do something special — we planned a trip to Ella.

It was our first proper girls’ getaway, and we were all excited like little kids. I still remember how happy my mom was — taking photos, hugging us, and just soaking in the beauty of Sri Lanka again after being away for so long.

The Ella Special Train — A Dream Ride

We took the Ella Special Train, and it was hands down one of the most beautiful journeys I’ve ever experienced. The views were unreal — rolling green tea plantations, misty mountains, waterfalls appearing out of nowhere, and local kids waving as the train passed.

My sister and I took turns sitting by the window, and even my mom couldn’t stop smiling. It wasn’t just the scenery — it was the feeling of being present together, without stress or rush, enjoying something pure and simple.

If you’re ever planning to go, book the Ella special train in advance — the seats fill up fast. And trust me, the view is worth every second.

Our Stay: Simple and Serene

We stayed at a cozy little guesthouse in Ella, run by a local family. It had a balcony that looked out at the hills, and the mornings were cold and misty. My mom would sit with her coffee, wrapped in a shawl, just gazing outside. We weren’t rushing anywhere — it felt like time had slowed down.

One evening, the host even made us fresh roti and dhal curry. It reminded my mom of her childhood in Sri Lanka, and she kept saying how much she missed this kind of simple, homemade food.

We stayed at a charming place called Ella Flower Garden Resort, which had a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and tea plantations. It was peaceful and beautifully maintained. The morning fog made the whole place look like a dream. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and soaking in the fresh air.

During our stay, we tried several new foods at the resort restaurant. From freshly prepared curries to unique Sri Lankan desserts, everything tasted amazing. My mom was especially happy — she kept saying how much she missed this kind of natural, flavorful food. Watching her enjoy each bite with a smile was one of my favorite moments from the entire trip.

Our Hikes: Little Adam’s Peak & Ella Rock

Little Adam’s Peak

This was our first hike — and my sister’s first ever! It was easy enough for all of us and gave us the most amazing view from the top. We sat there for a while, took pictures, and laughed a lot. The wind, the clouds, the view — it was all so magical.

Ella Rock

This one was a bit tougher, and we didn’t go all the way to the top because my mom got a bit tired. But honestly, the path itself was beautiful — walking through tea estates, seeing local farmers, and chatting with other travelers.

We learned that sometimes it’s not about reaching the end — it’s about enjoying the journey together.

Nine Arches Bridge: Like a Movie Scene

We made it to Nine Arches Bridge early in the morning to catch the train passing through. It looked like something out of a fairytale — fog hanging in the air, train slowly crossing the arches, people cheering and waving.

We stood there quietly, each of us in our own thoughts. I think we all realized how rare and beautiful that moment was — all three of us, together, in one place, happy.

The Flavors of Ella

We ate at little local places — not fancy restaurants, but they served the best food.
Highlights:
Kottu Roti sizzling on a hotplate
– Coconut roti with lunu miris that brought tears to our eyes (and still, we ate more!)
Hot ginger tea after a cold morning hike

One evening we sat at a café and talked for hours. No phones, no distractions — just us and the sound of crickets in the background.

Why Ella Stays in My Heart

This trip wasn’t just about sightseeing. It was about reconnecting — with nature, with each other, and with ourselves. I saw my mom relax for the first time in years. I saw my sister become brave on the hikes. And I saw myself feeling deeply grateful — for my family, for this country, for that moment.
